Why is it a hen party?

Why is it a hen party called a hen party and why is the male equivalent not called a ......... party? Why is the male party called a stag party and the female party not called a deer (dear) party?????? Food for thought?

Why is it a hen party?
In many parts of Scotland a woman is often called 'hen', such as 'how are you then, hen?' Perhaps this is the origin.

STAG -- "In the 1930s, 'stag movies' were short, pornographic films shown at 'stag parties' for men about to be married ('stag' had been used to mean 'for men only' since 1934)." Other uses of stag: going "stag" to a dance (going without a date) and standing in the "stag line," a line of men waiting for a dance with an unattached woman.

: There's another stag connection with odd male rituals - even possibly ones that involve willingly drinking alcohol to excess and regurgitative quantities, soliciting the favours of ladies who are prepared happily to remove all their clothing for the appropriate fee, and then being left naked chained to a lamp-post somewhere.

The Horned God referred to in both Celtic and early English mythology was a symbol of all things male - I believe that the Celts called him Cernunnos. Legend from these times is often confused, but it seems clear that in pre-Christian times, Brits definitely worshipped a large hairy god who sported antlers, ran around with the Einheriar, or wild hunt, and who probably belched at inappropriate times, never bothered putting the toilet seat back down, and who stayed out far too late without ever phoning home to warn anyone.

Cernunnos is a Celtic god whose representations were widespread in the ancient Celtic world. As a horned god, Cernunnos is associated with horned male animals, especially stags and the ram-headed snake; this and other attributes associate him with produce and fertility.

Antlered mammals would be a better model for a group of men because the males do associate, at least for fighting during mating season. Macho men are sometimes called "bucks, and in Australia they have bucks night instead of stag night
Reply:because hens are females
Reply:It,s called hen because they go looking for c**k for the last time lol ..
Reply:It is a hens party because of the noise women make when we get together
Reply:Because she's gonna marry the "c*ck of the walk"? :p Who knows?

Hen as slang for "woman" dates from 1626; hence hen party "gathering of women," first recorded 1887. Henpecked is from 1680. "The henpect Man rides behind his Wife, and lets her wear the Spurs and govern the Reins." [Samuel Butler]

A stag party consists of men only. It's a "last party" for the single male. Stag can also mean a "castrated bull". Ack! :o That's not very nice, is it?

Those are both very derogatory terms if you ask me. :-
Reply:|don't know u tell me
Reply:Maybe it is something about when women get together that we cluck like chickens? because there are a lot of negative symbols to portray women, and stag night, because "we" always asscosiate males with the power animal, horse, bull etc...

That is all I can think off...
Reply:Good question.
Reply:A taxi driver's nightmare, A hen party is like the Stag party but for the ladies, it is the last fling for a girl who is going to marry, the last binge with her mates and usually the " Ladies " part goes out of the window.
Reply:its a party for women only
Reply:Because it was a group of woman out looking for a c o c k!! Her last night of freedom and all that!!!
