Republican Party's origins?

The Democratic Party comes from the Democratic-Republican Party. From what party does the contemporary Republican Party come?

Republican Party's origins?
Well, i guess if you go back that far the Federalist party of Hamilton and Adams.

what is interesting is that teh democratic-republican party, in a lot of ways, is more inclined with the republican party of today, and the federalist party is similar to the democratic party.
Reply:The section of society that can think logically
Reply:In part the wigs, and the dixie crats. Both parties kinda switched around for about 100 years after the civil war and into the civil rights movement. Because issues today are much different than issues of the early 1800's you see some overlap in philosophy from both parties.

There was once a time when the south perdominatly voted democrat and the north perdominately voted republican.
Reply:(Long story short) The Whig party grew out of the Federalist party, and the modern day Republican party split off from the Whigs, mainly because the Whigs just weren't abolitionist enough. The first Republican president was Abe Lincoln.

And yes, today's Republican party pretty much follows the ideals of the old Democratic-Republicans, while today's Democrat party has adopted the old Federalist party ideals (with a large streak of Marxism thrown in as well).
