Why do we have a two-party system if we can have a medium multi-party system?

What I mean is if we have a single party government and also representation for many parties, it would already govern the people and represent the people. I don't like to have a one party system or a large multiparty system, what I like to see is have a Congress with say 8 parties. If the largest party has 45-50% of the seats and is the President's party, it could govern. And if the other parties get seats, it could represent. Let's keep the single party governments and allow fair representation.

Why do we have a two-party system if we can have a medium multi-party system?
You should try a Parliamentary Democracy! Which is in pretty much the rest of the world.) Trying not to get into grave detail, A mutli-party system probably wouldn't work as well in America as it does in other countries. The main reason why is because in America we have relaxed party discipline, meaning that politicians in America can vote however they want to, they do not have to listen to the party. In a Parliamentary Democracy, if you vote against the party a lot, you are moved down lower in the overall party rank (which means they get less funding for reelection/many other consequences). The majority party has 50%+ of the seats in Parliament and pretty much all of the politicians vote on party lines getting legislation passed fairly fast and easy. If we the U.S. adopted your form of government, it would be hard for the government to agree on one issue and get it passed. Also, as history shows with America's current form of government, the party that controls the White House could be different than the party that controls one or both Houses of Congress.

I don't understand the last part about single party governments, but as history shows they are not the most effienct way to govern.
Reply:We can have other party systems if a good qualified politicians runs and gets elected.
Reply:the hearding instinct! : )
Reply:political monoply that wears the minimum desguise that makes it look as if it isn`t a political monopoly :)
Reply:not quiet sure what u mean but if we had a one party government then we would be living under one rule and that would be a shame cos we would live under thier rule only, our country is a socialist country, if this was to happen then it would be the same as comunism, who wants comunism

or a rule like hitler,
Reply:Well, we do have a multi-party system. It's dominated by the Democratic and Republican parties. Within each party there are constituent interests that could in fact, split off and become there own parties such as environmentalist splitting the Democratic Party and joining the Green Party or political secularists splitting from the Republican Party and joining the Libertarian Party.

It sounds like you would like to move to a Parliament style of legislature. There are advantages and disadvantages to such a system. The parliamentary system involves much more compromise, and thus, at times, less effective legislation.
